Halo Burger Review

Nothing gets vegans more excited than the prospect of plant-based junk food. Especially when it’s free.

Vegan fast-food chain Halo Burger celebrated the opening of its shop in Shoreditch in January by giving away over 100 burgers to anyone who showed up.

The queue stretched right down the street, with hungry customers happily waiting over an hour to get inside the door. The founder, Ross Forder attended the event and welcomed guests between flipping burgers.

As for the burger itself, it was unlike any other. Time Out magazine describes it as “vegan junk food at its junkiest” and that is exactly right. The signature “Halo” burger is made with two juicy patties from Beyond Meat, “American style”, caramelised onion, lettuce, tomato, gherkins. And let’s not forget the signature sauce, a tangy replica of McDonald’s sauce of the same name, but vegan. Enough said.

If you’re one of those vegans that gets grossed out by realistic meat substitutes, maybe avoid this one. But there are definitely other things for you. Try the Pink Salt Fries, perfectly cooked to be crispy yet fluffy in the middle, with a light dusting of Himalayan salt.

While current coronavirus measures prevent the restaurant being able to open for customers, lucky Londoners can still order from Halo Burger for a perfect quarantine pick-me-up.
